Criminal lawyers edmonton - Tim Winter

Tim Winter

Student-at-Law

Tim joined Hopkins Law in the fall of 2023. Having earned a Bachelor of Science (physics) degree at the University of British Columbia, Tim went on to earn his juris doctor from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law.

During law school, Tim volunteered with the Student Legal Services of Edmonton (SLS) Criminal Law Project, representing individuals facing criminal charges in the Alberta Court of Justice. He also worked to help low-income individuals navigate the legal system as part of the SLS Legal Education and Reform Project through community outreaches at the Bissell Centre and Hope Mission in Edmonton’s inner city. In his third year of law school, Tim interned with Legal Aid Alberta, where he assisted duty counsel with criminal court appearances. Tim remains committed to helping those in need in our community through his new role as a student-at-law with Hopkins Law.

Tim serves in the Primary Reserve of the Canadian Armed Forces, formerly as an infantry soldier and now as an artillery officer. Most recently, his service found him fighting the Alberta wildfires. His ongoing stint in the army has instilled in him a sense of duty to the public and service to Canadians from all walks of life.

Tim’s passion for criminal defence law extends to a desire to focus on the defence of firearms offences. His background in physics, service in the combat arms, education in criminal law, and personal experience as a long-time RPAL holder, all combine to give him a unique scientific, practical, and academic perspective on firearms law.

Outside of law, Tim has a broad range of interests. He loves the study of languages and speaks English, French, Portuguese and Russian to varying levels of fluency. He also enjoys wood carving and tinkering with motorcycles. He is a long-suffering supporter of the Ottawa Senators.

Hopkins Law is delighted to have Tim on our team. It is our hope that he will continue with us as a full member of the Alberta Bar, once his articles are complete.
